S60 at NJ Volvo Dealer Named Top Safety Pick

The 2012 Volvo S60 has been named a “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety after performing well in front, side, rollover and rear crash protection tests.

Top marks of “Good” were awarded to the 2012 Volvo S60 in all three categories of testing—roof strength, frontal offset and side impact. The IIHS says, “the roof of the S60 withstood a force equal to 4.95 times the car’s weight. By comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight. Institute research demonstrates that occupants of vehicles with strong roofs are much less likely to sustain serious injuries in rollover crashes.”

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Break is a world-first technology available for NJ Volvo drivers on our Volvo S60. This system helps drivers avoid accidents using radar and camera-based technology that detects pedestrians in front of the car, then warns the driver if anyone walks into its path. The system even automatically activates the S60’s full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time.

Collisions at speeds of up to 22 mph can be avoided using the Pedestrian Detection system. At higher speeds, the technology can reduce the car’s speed as much as possible prior to impact.

NJ shoppers who drive home with the S60 can get Pedestrian Detection as part of the car’s optional technology package, which also includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Safety still comes standard on the 2012 S60, with City Safety, yet another world-first technology from Volvo. This system works to prevent collisions with vehicles ahead at speeds of 19 mph or less. It works by using a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely to happen. Then, depending on speed, the City Safety system will either pre-charge the brakes, or automatically brake to avoid rear-end collisions or lessen their impact.
